Deformable shoelace

A deformable shoelace, modeled as a very soft elastic rod with stiff aglets, for lacing, bow tying and dexterity benchmarks.

Also called shoe lace or bootlace.

Delivered as USD for NVIDIA Isaac Sim

How is the deformable shoelace modeled?

A shoelace is even softer than rope, with fabric friction that holds a bow. We model it as a rod with very low bending stiffness and high friction, and give flat laces a width so they lie flat.

The aglets at each end are short rigid sections, which is what makes threading a lace through an eyelet possible.

Which parts of the deformable shoelace deform?

Lace
Very soft rod that loops and holds a bow
Rigid parts
Aglets

What ships in the USD?

One USD file per variant, with the render mesh, the simulation geometry and a physics material bound to it. Every value is set and named, so you can open it in NVIDIA Isaac Sim and run your task, or read the numbers into your own solver from the material JSON.

  • Elastic rod. A centerline curve with a radius, and stiffness in bending, twisting and stretching. Used for cables, wires, hoses and ropes.

Where is it used?

  • Tying a bow
  • Threading eyelets
  • Dexterous hand benchmarks

Industries: Household, Retail

Questions

Which simulators does the deformable shoelace open in?

It ships as USD for NVIDIA Isaac Sim and Newton. We also deliver MJCF for MuJoCo and Genesis, a GLB mesh, and a JSON file with every material value.

Can it be matched to our real object?

Yes. Send us a sample, a drawing or a few photos and we set size, stiffness and friction to match your part.

How do we get it?

Choose your simulator, format and variant, then tell us where to send it. We prepare the files and email them to you.

Not in the catalog? We build any object to order, with the same physics and delivery.
